Xcode is Apple's integrated development surroundings (IDE) for macOS, used to develop software for macOS, iOS, iPadOS, watchOS, and tvOS. It was initially released in late 2003; the latest stable release is version thirteen.three.1, released on April eleven, 2022, and is bachelor via the Mac App Store free of charge for macOS Monterey users. [3] Registered developers tin can download preview releases and prior versions of the suite through the Apple Developer website. [4] Xcode includes Command Line Tools (CLT), which enable UNIX-way development via the Concluding app in macOS. [5] They can also be downloaded and installed without the GUI.

Major features [ edit ]

Xcode supports source lawmaking for the programming languages: C, C++, Objective-C, Objective-C++, Java, AppleScript, Python, Ruby, ResEdit (Rez), and Swift, with a variety of programming models, including just non limited to Cocoa, Carbon, and Java. Third parties accept added support for GNU Pascal, [6] Free Pascal, [vii] Ada, [viii] C#, [nine] Go, [ten] Perl, [eleven] and D. [12]

Xcode tin can build fat binary (universal binary) files containing code for multiple architectures with the Mach-O executable format. These helped ease the transitions from 32-bit PowerPC to 64-chip PowerPC, from PowerPC to Intel x86, from 32-bit to 64-bit Intel, and from x86 to Apple silicon by allowing developers to distribute a single application to users and letting the operating system automatically cull the appropriate architecture at runtime. Using the iOS SDK, tvOS SDK, and watchOS SDK, Xcode can as well be used to compile and debug applications for iOS, iPadOS, tvOS, and watchOS.

Xcode includes the GUI tool Instruments, which runs atop a dynamic tracing framework, DTrace, created past Sun Microsystems and released as part of OpenSolaris.

Xcode as well integrates built-in support for source code management using the Git version control system and protocol, allowing the user to create and clone Git repositories (which can be hosted on source code repository hosting sites such as GitHub, Bitbucket, and Perforce, or self-hosted using open-source software such every bit GitLab), and to commit, button, and pull changes, all from within Xcode, automating tasks that would traditionally be performed by using Git from the command line.

Composition [ edit ]

The master application of the suite is the integrated development surroundings (IDE), also named Xcode. The Xcode suite includes well-nigh of Apple'southward programmer documentation, and built-in Interface Builder, an application used to construct graphical user interfaces. Up to Xcode 4.ane, the Xcode suite included a modified version of the GNU Compiler Collection. In Xcode three.1 up to Xcode 4.six.3, it included the LLVM-GCC compiler, with front ends from the GNU Compiler Collection and a lawmaking generator based on LLVM. [13] In Xcode 3.ii and later, it included the Clang C/C++/Objective-C compiler, with newly-written front ends and a code generator based on LLVM, and the Clang static analyzer. [xiv] Starting with Xcode 4.2, the Clang compiler became the default compiler, [fifteen] Starting with Xcode 5.0, Clang was the merely compiler provided.

Up to Xcode 4.vi.three, the Xcode suite used the GNU Debugger (GDB) every bit the back-end for the IDE'due south debugger. Starting with Xcode four.iii, the LLDB debugger was likewise provided; starting with Xcode four.5 LLDB replaced GDB equally the default dorsum-cease for the IDE's debugger. [16] Starting with Xcode 5.0, GDB was no longer supplied. [17]

Removed features [ edit ]

Formerly, Xcode supported distributing a product build process over multiple systems. One technology involved was named Shared Workgroup Build, which used the Bonjour protocol to automatically discover systems providing compiler services, and a modified version of the free software product distcc to facilitate the distribution of workloads. Earlier versions of Xcode provided a system named Dedicated Network Builds. These features are absent in the supported versions of Xcode.

Xcode too includes Apple'south WebObjects tools and frameworks for edifice Java spider web applications and spider web services (formerly sold as a dissever production). As of Xcode three.0, Apple dropped [18] WebObjects evolution inside Xcode; WOLips [nineteen] should be used instead. Xcode three still includes the WebObjects frameworks.

Version history [ edit ]

one.x series [ edit ]

The adjacent significant release, Xcode 1.five, had amend code completion and an improved debugger.

ii.ten series [ edit ]

Xcode ii.0 was released with Mac Bone Ten v10.4 "Tiger". Information technology included the Quartz Composer visual programming language, better Code Sense indexing for Java, and Ant back up. It also included the Apple Reference Library tool, which allows searching and reading online documentation from Apple tree's website and documentation installed on a local computer.

Xcode 2.1 could create universal binary files. It supported shared precompiled headers, unit testing targets, conditional breakpoints, and watchpoints. Information technology also had better dependency analysis.

The final version of Xcode for Mac Os X v10.four was two.5.

3.x series [ edit ]

Xcode 3.0 was released with Mac Bone Ten v10.5 "Leopard". Notable changes since 2.1 include [20] the DTrace debugging tool (now named Instruments), refactoring support, context-sensitive documentation, and Objective-C 2.0 with garbage drove. It also supports Project Snapshots, which provide a bones form of version control; Bulletin Bubbles, which testify build errors debug values aslope lawmaking; and building four-architecture fatty binaries (32 and 64-bit Intel and PowerPC).

Xcode three.one was an update release of the developer tools for Mac OS Ten, and was the same version included with the iPhone SDK. It could target non-Mac Os 10 platforms, including iPhone OS 2.0. It included the GCC 4.2 and LLVM GCC 4.two compilers. Some other new feature since Xcode three.0 is that Xcode's SCM back up now includes Subversion one.5.

Xcode 3.ii was released with Mac Os X v10.6 "Snow Leopard" and installs on no earlier version of Os X. Information technology supports static programme analysis, amongst other features. It also drops official support for targeting versions before than iPhone OS 3.0. But it is nonetheless possible to target older versions, and the simulator supports iPhone Bone 2.0 through 3.1. Also, Java back up is "exiled" in 3.two to the organizer. [21]

Xcode three.two.6 is the last version that can be downloaded for free for users of Mac Bone X Snowfall Leopard (though it's non the last version that supports Snow Leopard; 4.ii is). Downloading Xcode 3.ii.6 requires a free registration at Apple's developer site.
